Pub 5- Poems

Poetry is a beautiful way of expressing all different types of emotions. My favorite types of poems are poems that express love. Love is a very strong emotion and many people struggle to show the emotion of love. I choose two very powerful poems about love. The first poem I chose is called “First Love” by Jennifer Franklin. The next poem I chose was called “Old Photographs” by Gabeba Baderoon. These two poems describe love in two different aspects. I choose the song “Photograph” by Ed Sheeran because I think it clearly connects to the theme of both of these songs.
The poem “First Love” by Jennifer Franklin is an emotional poem. It has the theme of love and being lost. In the first stanza, you can tell the author feels empty without her first lover. She states “The boy beside me is not you but he is familiar in all”(Lines 1-3). This first stanza shows that the author is comparing her lover to the first one she had. I think this line is relatable to readers because many people tend to do that as well. She also talks about how everyone leaves her at the end. “And every surrogate? Afflicted by my kindness they leave me with my music” (Lines 9-13). The author shows that every time somebody leaves her, she copes with the loss by listening to music. The reader can also relate to this because we always based the music that we listen to to the emotions we are feeling at that moment. A couple of words to describe this poem would definitely be broken, lost, hurt, and powerful.
The next poem I choose was “Old Photographs” by Gabeba Baderoon. The theme in this poem is remembering the past and love. The author of this poem is looking at old pictures of an old lover and reminiscing the memory they had together. In the first stanza, the author says “On my desk is a photograph of you taken by the women who loved you then” (Lines 1-2). In these lines, you can comprehend that the author is broken and she misses her old lover. This makes the reader feel bad for the author and gives a sense of loss to the reader. She also interprets the photos that she talks about in her poem. She talks about one particular photo. “Of all your old photographs, I wanted this one for its becoming. I think you were starting to turn your head a little, your eyes looking slightly to the side. Was this the beginning of leaving” (Lines 13-18). In these lines, the author is thinking about if her old lover was beginning to want to leave her. In these lines you can tell that the author is broken and she wonders if that was the moment that everything started to go wrong. This makes the reader feel bad for the author and makes the audience feel the pain she felt when she looked at the photograph. Some words to describe this poem is sorrow, pain, and brokenness.
In the Ed Sheeran song named “Photograph”, he talks about how memories are kept in photographs. The theme in this song is love and remembrance. The tone of this song is loving. In this song, a lot of personification is used because Ed gives them characteristics and a more human feel. “We keep this love in a photograph”(Line 5). He is saying that as long as they have the photograph, then they will see the love that is captured within the photograph. In the song, Ed says that in good and bad times, love can make you feel happy. That’s why he keeps the photograph with him all the time. “So you can keep me inside the pocket of your ripped jeans”(Lines 10-11). He is telling his lover to always keep the picture with them so they can always remember the emotion within the picture. Some words to describe this song is loving, calm, and remembrance.
The poems and the song are connected because they all talk about an aspect of love. In “Photograph” and the poem “Old Photograph” the two authors give the photos life and emotion. They feel a certain type of emotion when they look at their different pictures. Ed Sheeran keeps his photographs to keep his lover closer and Gabeba Baderoon looks at her photographs and feels the emotion of brokeness and love. In the poem “First Love”, Jennifer Franklin talks about being left alone with her music after she has felt the emotion of being abandoned. This also related to the Ed Sheeran song because in his song he talks about how if the lover leaves him its ok because only words bleed. In both instances, they have something
